Let me tell you about the club: there’s a club; the club has members; others are excluded from the club. The members of the club love it, needless to say — they love it because the club sets them apart from the rest.
Among the non-members there are those who love the club anyway, and those who hate it. Those non-members who love the club do so because they understand their membership application will be processed favourably sooner or later — their love is genuine and they’ll grow up to be faithful albeit ordinary members of the club.
Now in the group of those who hate the club we find two types. There are those who hate it because they understand the club is rancid and it should be burnt to the ground — they will create other clubs1. The rest are those who hate the club because they aren’t members yet. It is only a matter of time for these to be allowed in the club. Once inside, they’ll become the club’s most passionate gatekeepers. They’ll enforce the club’s borders with the zealotry of the migrations officer who’s just received a pay rise.
And so the club will live on and on. Fuelled by this hatred turned love. Patrolled by those it charitably let in.
There’s no guarantee, of course, that these other clubs won’t become rancid. This is just one of many problems with clubs.
