Last week I gave a talk to creative writing students at Arvon. I’m not employed as a writing tutor but I think quite a lot about my practice and I’m always happy to share my ideas with others1. This event was a very informal and pleasant occasion that entailed I read a couple of my short stories and answer some questions. One of the questions that stayed with me was about how to keep writing, considering how difficult it is to succeed at it (I’m paraphrasing but the spirit of the question was this). I don’t have any recollection whatsoever about my answer, so I will try to answer it here. Again. For the first time.
