What do you regret?
A while back I read a piece about people in their dying moments and the things they regretted. It might have been inspired by the predictably-titled, listicle-driven, The Top Five Regrets of the Dying, a 2011 book by one Bronnie Ware, a former palliative care nurse. I don’t remember the full list of these regrets, but they were all rather commonsensical. Stuff like “I wish I’d lived the life I wanted to live”, or “I wish I’d been a better friend”. Perhaps not in these exact words, but that was the sentiment. There weren’t regrets about not racking up a higher body count, if you catch my drift, or about not earning more money. It makes perfect sense — these pursuits are meaningless in the big scheme of things.
